Catherine Rutgers produces colorful inkjet prints based on observations of natural phenomena in an urban environment. The source for her digital art is image capture, or high-resolution scans, of original paintings, silkscreen and photographs, or found objects including leaves, flowers and feathers. Her latest works will be on display at the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center, 12 Vassar Street, Poughkeepsie, NY until 11/20/05.

Part theater group, part production company, and part community outreach Image Quilt helps people better themselves and their community through raw expression and no-holds-barred works.
Most recently the Albany-based power group put on “Iken’s Perversion,” a play about Love, Redemption, Poetry, Semen, and the bond between a skirt-wearing, older white man and a young black woman. The play featured Marishka Shanice Phillips & Doug Barron, was written by Diana Amsterdam, and was directed by Omonike Akinyemi.

Dream-Inspired Works at Paxton-Tanner Gallery

This time around we visit John Paxton, the owner and curator of the Paxton-Tanner Gallery in Poughkeepsie. This in-home style gallery houses the hundreds upon hundreds of works including poetry, drawings, sculptures, and paintings of every medium done by the late Vivian Gaines Tanner.
Most if not all of this collection was based on dreams and intuition. In my opinion, many of the pieces have a surreal quality that’s simultaneously profound and approachable. Like dreams, they’re equal parts beautiful, disturbing, simple, and complex.
Their style, subtlty, and composition are worthy of the acclaim and attention they’ve amassed over the last several decades, while their initially simple beauty makes them truely inviting works. Many of them still have yet to be displayed publically.
Look closely folks… these are not just pretty pictures, they’re pieces of our collective mind.
